Trick or Treat

Trick or Treating here usually starts around 6:00pm. We went outside a little early to get some photos before the ruckus began. Being single with kids, I had to turn off the lights to take them trick or treating which always seems a little rude. Somehow I do not trust the trick or treaters enough to leave a bowl of candy on the porch while we are gone - does anyone really do this anymore?!

I always buy candy that I hate so there is not chance I'll eat the leftovers. This year is was long laffy taffy sticks - gross. Their Dad came at some point while we were gone and handed out our candy. He was going to take the older kids trick or treating when I returned, but was too tired from a race that morning. Instead, the kids and I finished handing out candy, turned out the lights again and snuggled down on the couch to watch a movie together (while I ate the good stuff out of their loot - if only everyone handed out laffy taffy!!).

Yes, Calvin is carrying a horse purse. He decided it must be part of his costume - you know, because it is a horse.

Trick or Treating in Minnesota involves a lot of layering. Costumes must be chosen for their ability to expand with the turtlenecks, wool sweaters and fleece jackets we cram underneath. Note Max's paunch - an unfortunate side effect.

Sophie conveniently chose to be a snow princess which would explain the hat, scarf, mittens and winter boots.

Calvin was a cowboy riding a horse this year. The horse was procured from a yard sale for $3.00. The horse was kind of a pain in the butt. Calvin found it difficult to get up and down the stairs and about half way around the block, he sat down in someone's yard and took of the horse. He finished trick or treating as a lone cowboy.

It was a nice Halloween. The kids were happy with their haul and this year, our new bishop does not have a candy jar on his desk which means I cannot make them give the majority of their candy to the bishop. I'm going to have to come up with new plan to get it out of the house!
